The article presents a literature review from a historical approach, seeks to demonstrate how different understandings of the concept of document have evolved in relation to each other and also in relation to changes in professional and academic communities, as well as in society in general. It deepens the studies based on theories and the ability to complement both the research carried out around Documentation in order to understand the construction of the document concept and how it can be inserted in the practices of information professionals.
