The informational approach to knowledge in Dretske

At the threshold of the 20th century, humanity has experienced significant advances in information and communication technologies. In this period, many areas of science adopted informational approaches in their research, they assumed interdisciplinary methodologies in their investigations. Disciplines like Philosophy and Ethics of Information have been introduced, trying to understand, among other things, what information is, its ontological and epistemological status, and its effects on human actions. One of the classic problems of philosophy - investigated with the contribution of these new disciplines - is the one concerning knowledge. Fred Dretske is one of the contemporary thinkers who investigates this problem from an informational point of view, proposes a definition aimed at solving the deficiencies of the traditional approach. For Dretske, knowledge is a belief causally supported by information. This present article intends to discuss the aspects of Dretske's definition of knowledge. To this end, we divide it into three parts. In the first part, we analyzes what is involved in the Dretskean concept of information. In the second part, we will discuss Dretske's definition of knowledge and some elements related to it. Finally, in the last part, we expose some criticisms directed to his notions of information and knowledge.
