A case of “infamous men”
(lost) points to weave the institutional memory of the 60s in the Military Court

Bibliographic, theoretical-exploratory study on institutional memory and its complex relationship with the national historical memory. Its general objective was to contribute to the reflection on how the library of the Military Court of Rio Grande do Sul could analyze sensitive documents to organize, preserve and disseminate the information contained in the historical judicial processes related to facts that occurred from 1964 to 1985 to make them available for future research. It presents a brief reflection on institutional memory and its tension in relation to memory/history. It shows, as examples of relevant sensitive judicial processes, those that were instituted during the 1964 exception regime, and reached the so-called groups “Os Eleven da Brigada”, using the metaphor of Michel Foucault’s “infamous men”. Finally, it postulates the pertinence of maintaining this type of process to avoid erasing information and to provide future research. It recognizes unanswered gaps about the organization of this collection itself, motivated by the period of closure of institutions in the context of COVID-19, a global pandemic, and points to the convenience of continuing research or new research in the rich collection.
