Abstract

After January 8, 2023, when the invasion of Praça dos Três Poderes in the Federal District took place, in an attempt to overthrow a government legitimized by the election, a network of resistance and democratic restoration was formed, following previous manifestations such as the Carta às brasileiras e aos brasileiros and the Frente Ampla pela Democracia. The democratic resistance proposed to keep democracy alive. In this context, theoretical aspects of authoritarianism and totalitarianism that threaten constitutional democracies with death are examined. Indicating concrete situations, in the Brazilian case, it seeks to identify elements that give life and support to democracy, such as a public sphere, democratic pedagogy, and social activism.
