This article deals with disruptive technologies: Traditional Metaverse and Decentralized Metaverse. It addresses existing studies that relate Traditional Metaverse to disruptive technologies, references practical examples of application and use of these recent technologies in several sectors, and demonstrates how and to what extent they are already impacting the economy. Furthermore, this article aims to answer the following research question: what are the impacts of Decentralized Metaverse as a disruptive technology? To this end, the methodology employed was a search for scientific articles related to the topic and the perform of a technological prospecting study in which searches were conducted in patent databases to identify and stratify patents dealing with Traditional Metaverse and Decentralized Metaverse. The results obtained combined with the observations contained in the various analyzed articles, indicate that the impacts of Traditional Metaverse as a disruptive technology can be explained by the characteristics of interactivity, immersion, accessibility, interoperability, and various applications. Additionally, the impacts of Decentralized Metaverse as a disruptive technology are strongly linked to the decentralization of metaverse environments and the advantages arising from this process. Furthermore, the results suggest that the technologies are emergent, South Korea and South Korean companies emerge as protagonists, and the main themes related to Decentralized Metaverse are digital processing of electrical data and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) adapted for services, planning, or business.
