BRICS is a mechanism for economic cooperation and development among emerging countries, composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In order to understand the behavior of economic development indicators regarding environmental issues, this study analyzes the Global Innovation Index (GII) reports of these countries regarding ecological sustainability (renewable energies, environmental performance, and ISO 14001 certification). The research, of an exploratory nature, involved a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 297 articles from the Scopus scientific database and the collection and analysis of secondary data from 11 GII reports, delimited to annual publications from 2013 to 2023. There was a 191% increase in articles during the second five-year cycle (2019–2023) compared to the first cycle (2014–2018). In the GDP per unit of energy indicator, the BRICS countries with the best results were Brazil and India. At the same time, Brazil and Russia stood out in environmental performance, and China and South Africa excelled in ISO 14000 certifications. Overall, the study demonstrated significant progress among the countries, but also highlighted challenges that need to be addressed with more robust public policies and continuous investments.
