Between the political and religious dispute

Abstract

Aware of the growing occupation and relevance of the evangelical religious segment in politics (Goldstein 2020; Prandi, Santos, Bonato 2019), as well as in traditional and digital media (Cunha 2019; Martino 2015), this research performs a comparative analysis on the performance of the evangelical deputies with the most number of followers on Instagram and the most accessed gospel news portals, in order to verify their actions regarding the vote on PL2630 - which establishes the Brazilian Law of Freedom, Responsibility and Transparency on the Internet. From a corpus of 204 publications (73 news and 131 posts), we verified what characterizes the performance of these subjects - who intersect media, politics and religion on the national scene - in an agenda that debates measures to combat the dissemination of false content on networks social media and private messaging services. Thus, based on the content analysis, we consider their positions in relation to the PL, whether in favor or against it, as well as whether there is an emphasis on religious themes among the criticism at it. We also included word clouds to visualize the terms prioritized by the portals and deputies. As a result, we highlight that parliamentarians are more emphatic in opposition to the PL, highlighting criticism of the government amid accusations of censorship. Meanwhile, the portals include some points favorable to the project and encompass more apprehensions of the religious scope
