Computers Make Art, Artists Don't Make Money

platformization, artificial inteligence and Audiovisual Sovereignty in the Cases of Netflix and Globo in Brazil

  • The increasing platformization and adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have transformed the audiovisual production chain, resulting in significant challenges to Brazilian audiovisual sovereignty. This article aims to investigate how these processes intensify power asymmetries and promote technological dependence, impacting local producers and their value-generating capacities. Through the analysis of two cases— the relationship between independent producers and Netflix and the partnership between Grupo Globo and Google Cloud Platform, illustrating Globo's transformation into a MediaTech, —we reflect on how automation and content standardization, driven by AI and platformization, foster technological dependence and update the dynamics of data colonialism. The conclusion indicates that, in a context of increasing influence from foreign platforms and the fragility of national regulatory frameworks, it is imperative to develop strategies that strengthen audiovisual sovereignty, ensuring the protection and promotion of Brazilian culture, values, and narratives.
