When the climate crisis turns into a narrative contest
symbolic consumption and manipulative strategies during COP30
Keywords:
Communication, Consumption, COP30, Climate Change, Manipulative DiscoursesAbstract
This article investigates how the GloboNews and BandNews TV profiles covered COP30 on Instagram, showing how the process was mediatized and marked by crises, conflicts, and symbolic disputes, to the detriment of technical and solution-oriented climate debate. The objective is to understand how these framings were produced, their meaning effects, and the power dynamics that structured this circulation, including the role of symbolic consumption and the construction of a credibility ethos. The methodology articulates Critical Discourse Analysis (Van Dijk, 2008) and the procedures of manipulative discourse (Charaudeau, 2022). The findings indicate that crisis-related themes (e.g., fires and structural failures) were framed through discursive codes of authority and future-oriented projections, resulting in heightened impact and audience engagement. Furthermore, the coverage reinforced patterns of symbolic consumption grounded in emotional appeal and a crisis-centric logic.
