The Carbon Proletariat
The Necessary Workforce for the Existence of Assetized Nature

Drawing on a distinctly Marxist theoretical framework, this paper seeks, as a preliminary step, to shift the focus of discussions on the carbon market toward the labor required for the existence of this financial commodity: carbon credits. It seeks to establish, based on the ontology of labor, the inescapable necessity of transforming forest peoples into proletarians – a process that requires the State and scientific knowledge – to convert natural carbon dioxide sequestration flows into a financial asset. Furthermore, it examines situations and statements that occurred during COP30 to support the proposed theoretical framework.
