Abstract

Despite the issue of frugality being present in academic discourse for a longer time, the term “frugal innovation” has been used more frequently in the last decade. Knowing the initiatives is essential to mature the vision of opportunities, inducing processes and preparing the innovation ecosystem to recognize the particularities and develop frugal innovations in Brazil. Knowing what has been developed by universities becomes preponderant in this process, and in this perspective, this article aims to analyze the potential of the projects developed by the Institutional Program of Initiation Scholarships in Technological Development and Innovation (PIBITI) of the State University of Mato Grosso Grosso do Sul (UEMS), in the generation of local technological solutions with characteristics of frugal innovation in the period from 2013 to 2021. The methodological design used an approach based on lexicometry and text data mining techniques in order to understand whether the projects UEMS PIBITI have the potential to build interactions between the university, companies or specific demands of Mato Grosso do Sul society. UEMS' vocation is clearly evident in research related to agricultural technologies, health and education solutions, development of new materials, based on the expertise installed in the Research Centers and with a focus on regional themes. The frugal innovation bias was verified in the analyzed projects, which demonstrates the relevance of continuity, as well as the improvement of the PIBITI Program, as a collaborative source of local technological solutions in Mato Grosso do Sul, potential strengthening of science and applicability in society in general and Brazilian companies.
