Neoliberal cognitivism and user work in UX design

  • This work continues the research that aims to fill a gap in critical and transdisciplinary studies regarding the political-economic and psychosocial implications of UX design. To achieve this, based on an integrative literature review, we have developed elements for an immanent critique of the theories, techniques, and technologies within this field. We have identified long-standing beliefs about reducing the ontology of social being to the laws of nature as an argument for our fallible cognition, which would justify the creation of architectures for contexts, decisions, and activities for users of digital commodities. Utilizing the foundational literature of UX design (cognitive sciences, human-computer interaction, and marketing), we have demonstrated the ideological and unscientific nature of these assumptions, as well as their mediating role in compelling users' cooperation in the production of digital data. Drawing from socio-historical theories of subjectivity, we conclude that (1) these determinations are "encrypted" by UX design, causing digital technologies, their labor, and their general intellect to appear in the fetishized form of digital commodities; and (2) this necessitates organized political actions for the democratic regulation of this market
