Public library and military regime in Brazil: Unraveling authoritarian discourses

Abstract

Discursive analysis of the relationship between military regime (first period: 1964-1970) and the public library in Brazil from actions developed by the Instituto Nacional do Livro-INL and recorded in official documents on cultural policies in the context of the military regime in the period mentioned. It is Worth noting that Brazilian public libraries are originally located next to the cultural structures of the State and directly experience the discursive guidelines generated at the state level. In the authoritarian political context analyzed, the public library acted as a space for disseminating the national security Doctrine defended by military regime, thus being subject to authoritarian cultural guidelines. In this moment of political authoritarianism, the Brazilian publica library presented itself as a cultural institution lacking spontaneous production in discursive terms, that is, incapable of generating a discursive logic and, consequently, a cultural proposal independent of the discourse elaborated by the military regime
