Visibility and equitable access to scientific resources are essential pillars for the advancement of global research; however, the current reality reveals concerning disparities. The way we measure the circulation of science from the Global South has shown asymmetries in scientific dissemination channels dominated by scientific publishing oligopolies. Meanwhile, the growing platformization of science intensifies the reliance on digital channels, further excluding those lacking access to technology or adequate digital infrastructure. The absence of access to APIs to understand the circulation of science from the Global South in the digital environment adds an additional layer of opacity, hindering the analysis and promotion of scientific diversity. In this context, the issue of epistemic and digital sovereignty emerges as a fundamental aspect for thinking about new forms of alternative metrics that not only denounce but also highlight important characteristics showing the epistemic diversity of Global South research. This essay aims to discuss this challenging panorama of global informational asymmetries that point to pathways to overcome these structural barriers and promote truly inclusive, collaborative, and sovereign science.
