Based on the Manual of Informetrics used in the University Carlos III of Madrid (Spain), the aim of this article is to introduce a historical evolution of Informetrics. To understand the evolution of Informetrics as a scientific field, some of the more significant contributions, related to Metric Information Studies (MIS), are analyzed in three groups. The first is about origins and definitions, and characterizes Informetrics, as a specific topic inside Metric Studies of Information. The second group presents some historical events related to investigations in the area. The last one is a proposal represented by a figure, explaining the greatest influences in the historical evolution of the area, and presents some suggestions for the use of Informetrics, as an approach in future studies. Other literature reviews about Informetrics were added in this article in order to update the data and strengthen content.
