The article discusses the books in Information Science cited in doctoral theses in Brazil. It raises a discussion about the role of books and theses for the constitution and stabilization of discourse in the field. We identified, by means of Capes indicators, 127 books, 58 monographs and 69 compilations produced by the 14 Graduate Programs analyzed between 1998 and 2009. We identified 91 theses among five Programs analyzed (2007-2009), finding 16,253 citations, of which 6316 books, the most cited source. Citation analysis was based on metrics information studies.
