Documentary and Conspiracy

the Epoch Times Brazil’s case

  • This article seeks to highlight, through an analysis based on Greimas’ semiotics, characteristics presented in the discursive construction in the second part of the documentary serie “Brazil – A last stand in the Americas”, produced by the brazilian branch of the US newspaper The Epoch Times – which corroborate with an appearance of truth to disinformational content and conspiracy theories. Throughout the text, the history of the journalistic vehicle and its relationship with the far right is discribed, followed by the description of the documentary, the semantic oppositions of its discourse, its narrative and discursive structures and the themes and figures presents. It is concluded that the discursive elaboration is similar to that already observed in other conspiracy documentaries, aims at a “model reader” and is based on the performance of the journalist
