Innovation and international investments are areas studied by different fields of knowledge and there are different interpretations concerning these terms, which amplifies the complexity of studying them. This article aims to conduct an exploratory research of the literature, in order to verify different approaches and understandings regarding international investments for innovation. For this purpose, a systematic survey of the international literature was carried out, based on the Cochrane protocol. The main result of this study was the observation that there is a perceptual plurality related to international investments for innovation, ranging from traditional perspectives to other unconventional perspectives. As a contribution, this paper offers a theoretical framework that aims to reconcile the different approaches related to international investments for innovation.
