Abstract Provocative thoughts about Librarianship as a profession and as knowledge, within Brazilian context as a third world country. The weakness of the area is focused and some reasons for that are pointed out: Library Science's lack of philosophical and social foundations, librarian's socio-political irresponsibility, dogmatic and technicist attitude of both librarians and professors at Library Schools. From users' point of view, a new profile of professional is demanded to work in a new library.A tridimensional model of library is proposed to embrace the spaces for representation (registered information), for presentation (live communication among individuals or groups to exchange experiences and information) and for creation (generation of information by the user, as a result of library inputs and stimulation). Finally, a challenge to change the face of librarianship in Brazil is proposed to the information professionals working in the country. |
