The contemporaneity of Brazilian agricultural research as reflection of distribution of citations age
Abstract
This paper reports an investigation into the age distribution of references of Brazilian agricultural scientists vis à vis their colleagues in developed countries. The study was based on the use of both quantitative data - citation appearing in a sizeable sample of articles published by these scientists - and qualitative data — interviews with 95 Brazilian agricultural scientists. Brazilian agricultural scientists rely much more heavily on old scientific literature than their in colleagues in developed countries. Such behaviour is clearly influenced by factors externai to the scientific realm, which are social, rather than cognitive in nature.
