Abstract
The complexity of social sciences, its concept of "superfluous asset" which causes its discrimination in prioritary programs of the administration, the peculiarities of users in this field as well as the conclusions of surveys carried out in Great Britain (INFROSS and DISSIS) are analyzed. The obstacles and the efforts to achieve cooperation among bibliographical services in social sciences both regionally and internationally are pointed out. A historical description is made of social sciences documentation activities in Brazil with particular attention to the publication of the Brazilian Bibliography of Social Sciences which was interrupted in 1979. The possibility of establishing a social sciences documentation system (Sociodata) is examined as well as the proposal to resume the publication of the Brazilian bibliography of social sciences as a by-product of the Bibliodata/Calco system of shared cataloguing coordinated by the Fundação Getúlio Vargas in which 27 libraries are participating including the National Library.
