Absorption of knowledge in Higher Education Institutions: validation of a model of measurement

The absorptive capacity-CA allows organizations to adapt to changes in the environment. Brazilian HEIs,
exposed to the fast pace of changes in their field, have a concern to remain competitive. In this sense,
understanding, creating meaning and adapting to the external environment offers HEIs a high degree of
competitiveness. The need for instruments to measure absorptive capacity in HEIs is essential to be validated.
This study aimed to validate an instrument for measuring AC in the context of HEI, using the view of Information
Technology managers. The method used was a quantitative research. The data collection used was of the
survey type; classified in terms of objectives as descriptive, and, because it is an analysis involving numerous
variables, the validation of the measurement instrument was performed through a confirmatory factor analysis.
The selected population was 414 HEIs and the sample totaled 56 HEIs located in the states of RS, SC and
PR. Of the 20 initial variables observed, low correlations were identified in 7 of them, resulting in an instrument
model with 13 variables that correlate with the first order factors of AC. Low correlations were found in the
variables related to communication mechanisms, routines and triggers for activating the search for external
knowledge. The positive point found was proactivity, showing that HEIs are proactive and do not wait for the
change to occur before adapting, in the view of IT managers.
