This paper defines Open Access and describes how it works. It reviews the reasons why Brazilian researchers should adopt it for their work, what benefits it brings , and why Brazilian research institutions and funders should require that work carried out by their researchers is made Open Access. The contrast is made between the ‘traditional’ system for publishing research findings and an Open Access research corpus for Brazil in terms of visibility and impact for Brazilian research.
