Abstract
Some of the difficulties arisen from the interrelationship between Information Science and Linguistics, besides a mutual lack of interdisciplinary understanding, are due to
expectations that Linguistics cannot now and perhaps will not ever be able to fulfil. Looking at the current research concerning Information Science and Linguistics we observe a renewed interest in natural language processing. This is mainly caused by the implementation of question-answer systems and the
increase in computer memory capacity. As Linguistics is of continuing importance to Information Science, we are trying to establish those parts of it that could eventually be included in the regular Brazilian courses for information scientists.
Along with this, Computational Linguistics, Reading Research, Science of Terminology and Translation Science are suggested as complementary disciplines. Each of these subareas is briefly analyzed with regard to Information Science.
