Cooperativism as a strengthening element for urban and periurban agriculture

Urban and Periurban Agriculture (UPA) is embodied by cooperation and consequently by manifestations of cooperativism. The reality of UPA in Brazilian cities is marked by limitations; however, cooperativism is a potential alternative to mitigate these obstacles, as well as to advance in better perspectives. The objective of this research was to demonstrate how cooperativism can help to face the problems that hinder the strengthening and recognition of farmers of this agricultural typology. We used intentional samples of published works on the themes that were articulated for the contextualization. As results, we observed that the absence of public policies and credit availability are limiting factors for UPA. The increase, as well as the outflow of the production are also difficulties faced by these farmers. These difficulties can be solved through cooperation, where members seek to make the activity viable, aiming at the autonomy of members, sustainability, food security, and local development. Therefore, the cooperativism as an element to face the problems and the strengthening based on the cooperative principles and values becomes a socioeconomically viable alternative for the UPA.
